Patching
If you are running any version of Microsoft Windows, you need to regularly update your software.
Over time, manufacturers discover errors, flaws and vulnerabilities in their programs. They release free fixes (patches) to repair their errors, and improve security. You need to regularly download and install these patches.
Manually
- Visit Windows Update.
Scan for updates.
Review and install updates.- Keep doing this until all critical updates are installed.
Automatically
In Windows 2000 onwards, you are able to tell the operating system to automatically download and install the critical updates in the background. This is a good idea, as humans tend to forget about things and let them slide for a while.
- Open Control Panel.
- Open System.

- Choose the Automatic Updates Tab.

- Tick the “Keep my computer up to date” checkbox.

- Choose your preferred setting (one of the three radio buttons).
Games
If games cause your computer to freeze (lock up and stop responding), try visiting the game manufacturer's website and downloading the latest patches. Almost all games are released with bugs, and many are much improved by patching. Well worth the time and trouble.
